Dental hygienist in South Molton

Our experienced hygienists can provide you with a professional clean and they can offer you so much more.

Whilst a visit to the hygienist is not a substitute for a full dental examination with a dentist, we recognise that some patients may not have access to see a hygienist at their own practice. We happily welcome patients who wish to use the services of our dental hygiene team, without them having to be examined by a dentist prior to visiting us.

What Is A Hygienist

What is a dental hygienist?

Dental therapists and hygienists are specially trained to work as part of the dental team, to give care to patients.

They play an important part in dental health care and are mainly concerned with preventive dental health and treating gum disease – showing you correct home care and helping to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

What can I do to help the hygienist? The hygienist’s main work is to prevent and treat gum disease. This includes professionally cleaning your teeth by removing plaque and tartar (usually called a ‘scale and polish’ or a prophylaxis). However, perhaps their most important role is showing you the best way to keep your teeth free of plaque. Plaque is a sticky coating that forms constantly on your teeth. Hygienists also give advice about diet and about preventing tooth decay. The hygienist will work with your dental team to give you care that is tailored to your needs.

What does a dental hygienist do?

Our Dental Hygienist has four main roles:

    • Removing calculus (tartar) from teeth – this is done by a technique called scaling and polishing
    • Cosmetic stain removal- staining from everyday food and drink can cause superficial staining on teeth which our hygienists can easily remove either by polishing or using our “airflow” system
    • Treating gum disease (also known as ‘gingivitis’ or ‘periodontal disease’) – this is caused by plaque which is a sticky film of bacteria. If left untreated, your gums will start to swell and bleed and can ultimately result in tooth loss
    • Teaching patients good oral hygiene techniques – individually tailored to specific needs

      Other Help For Adults

What other help can be given to adults?

Adults who have a lot of decay can benefit from having fluoride applied. They can also have anti-bacterial gels and solutions applied under the gum to kill the bacteria causing gum disease.

Another very important part of the hygienist’s work is showing you and telling you how to look after your mouth at home. The hygienist may also suggest giving up smoking, as this will reduce staining and improve your general health. Research has also shown that smokers have more gum disease and lose more teeth than non-smokers. Your hygienist will be able to advise you on various ways of giving up smoking. They can also give you special advice for home care if you have dental implants or orthodontic appliances.

Benefits of seeing a dental hygienist?

        • Hygienists are trained to thoroughly clean your teeth and gums
        • You will leave with a fresher, cleaner smile
        • Scale & polish will remove harmful plaque and deposits of tartar
        • Helps prevent periodontal (gum) disease by making a hygiene visit part of your dental care regime
          Benefits Of A Dental Hygienist

What can I expect from a direct access hygienist appointment?

In order for our dental hygiene team to treat direct access patients, we require new patients to complete a medical history and consent form for treatment. Hygienists are unable to diagnose, offer a prognosis or prescribe antibiotics, painkillers or any symptom-alleviating medication.

During a direct access appointment, if the hygienist feels you have any oral health problems which are outside of their oral hygiene scope, they will make you aware of this and recommend you see a dentist. On rare occasions, it may not be possible for the hygienist to treat a patient due to an issue with their general health, their medical history, a recent surgical/medical treatment or the condition of their mouth. Please let us know at the time of booking if there are any issues you think may be relevant.
